How To Fletch Traditional Arrows

Finished fletched arrows

Fletching with sinew (both authentic and artificial) is a little tricky at first, but it is easy when mastered. Turkey tail or wing feathers work well for this project. Wing feathers will produce a spiral fletch, while tail feathers lie flat on the shaft. You can find individual craft components in our Arrow Making Supplies category, or you can purchase an all inclusive (with detailed instructions) arrow kit in our Knife, Arrow, and Fire Kits category. You may also want to check out our Glues, Hafting, and Pigments category for other supplies to help make your arrows one-of-a-kind works of art.

Traditional Arrow Parts

Step 1

Prepare sinew by distressing the hank and separating the fibers in as many strong, long, single strands as possible. Let strands soak in slightly warm water for a few mintues before starting an actual wrap.

Step 2

Separate feather vane from the quill (hard spongy portion) of the feather. This will require a bit of practice but is relatively easy with the right technique. Trim 3 of the pulled vanes to uniform shape, leaving a 3/4 inch tab on the top and bottom for securing to the shaft with sinew.

Step 3

Hold feather securely to the shaft, and wrap with soaked sticky sinew. When the first vane is secure, continue with the second and then the third while paying attention to consistant spacing.

Step 4

Do a full sinew length wrap to cement in all the vanes in place.

Step 5

Perform step 3 on the bottom tab of the feathers.

Step 6

Perform step 4 on the bottom tab of the feathers.

Step 7

Tie a loop or two to secure the middle portion of your feathers.

Step 8

Trim your feathers to the desired shape.
