Uncleaned heat treated Keokuk chert spalls straight out
of the kiln. The chert at this stage has not been cleaned of waste like our
#1 graded spalls. Large variety of sizes and some odd shapes; uncleaned
rock will have some waste. Great practice material for beginners and advanced
knappers. Sold in 5lb lots.
Ungraded Heat Treated Keokuk Spalls without our final
cleaning stage performed. These uncleaned spalls are right out of our digital
temparture controlled kiln and do include some waste and defects. Sold in 5 lb
lots. Spalls range from 2-7 inches.
Keokuk Chert most
often ranges in color from grey, pink and tan with occasional bands of red and
purple. Keokuk is a dense, high quality chert found in parts of Oklahoma and
surrounding areas.
Next to impossible to knap raw out of the ground, we
digitally heat treat all of our Keokuk within close tolerances in an effort
to produce the most consistently knappable stone achievable.
Large knapping material requires large billets. Attempting
to knap large stone with too small of a billet will damage the billet and not
produce sizable thinning flakes early on in the process as needed. If you are
graduating to this size material from one of our kits, we recommend adding a
